Botanique

For the photography project Botanique, the Victoria greenhouse at Diergaarde Blijdorp serves as the starting point. This green oasis is set to be restored in 2027. Anyone walking through the greenhouse can immediately see that restoration is necessary. Yet, I hope to capture the current atmosphere of this place before it disappears. After the restoration, the greenhouse will indeed be returned to its former glory. The overgrown, wild beauty that currently defines the space will give way to a lighter, more open version. Even though I know that change is sometimes inevitable, I will miss the combination of decay and the cycle of growth and impermanence within the greenhouse. That’s why I’m trying to capture this unique atmosphere in my photographs.

Bij het fotografieproject Botanique is de Victoria-serre van Diergaarde Blijdorp het uitgangspunt. Deze groene oase zal in 2027 gerestaureerd gaan worden. Wie door de serre loopt, ziet direct dat restauratie noodzakelijk is. Toch hoop ik de huidige sfeer van deze plek vast te leggen voordat deze verdwijnt. Na de restauratie zal de serre immers in haar oude glorie worden hersteld. De overwoekerende, wilde schoonheid die de plek nu bezit, zal plaatsmaken voor een lichtere, ruimtelijkere variant. Ook al weet ik dat veranderingen soms onvermijdelijk zijn, ik zal de combinatie van verval en de cyclus van groei en vergankelijkheid in de serre gaan missen. Vandaar dat ik deze bijzondere sfeer nog in beeld probeer te vangen.
